LEGIBLY SIGNED BY GEORGE LUCAS! The Howard Chaykin Star Wars poster has already risen to the heights of being one of the most valued and sought after movie posters of all time - even without the George Lucas autograph! That's because it's the very first of all the Star Wars posters and/or products ever produced on the film. Additionally, this fantastic Howard Chaykin artwork is accredited with establishing the archetype for poster design within the Star Wars universe.
The general structure, as presented on this 1976 lithograph, has become a staple foundation for the design of hundreds - if not thousands - of different Star Wars movie theater and product advertising posters to follow. Yes, it's true, this poster is the first (1st) to show Darth Vader and the Death Star looming in the background, and, the characters assembled with their weapons in the foreground, with, space action around the periphery. This basic construction, or a variation thereof, is what we've all come to expect in a Star Wars advertisement. It all started with this poster! The release of it in 1976 also marked the beginning of the campaign to market, or publicize, the film to potential moviegoers. This isn't only "Poster 1" it's Product 1. In my opinion, that's a very BIG deal. THE LAUNCH OF STAR WARS TO THE PUBLIC. Before Star Wars was released, almost a year before the film was finished, George Lucas personally commissioned noted artist Howard Chaykin to render this poster and a new Marvel comic book series based on the Star Wars screenplay.
Gary Kurtz, Star Wars producer, and, Howard Chaykin were sent to the Comic Con and the Worldcon Science Fiction conventions in 1976 with a stack of these posters and a flyer to promote the upcoming film. It's been said that there were only 1000 Star Wars Chaykin posters originally printed.More than four decades later, the poster has certainly held it's rarity, and so the limited 1000 piece print-run number is probably an accurate one. The poster was never printed again in any official capacity, and so the only originals were made in 1976. Interestingly, this poster proudly says, "Poster 1" in the bottom left corner as part of its design (see photos 1&2). This indicates a series of Star Wars posters to come, but there never was a "Poster 2, " because Lucasfilm a.
You have to remember; Star Wars was a completely original cinematic creation. It wasn't a derivative of classic literature, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and so the general public had no idea what it was about or how impactful the film would become. In other words, the pre-release poster sales bombed! Very few were distributed and most of the ones that were bought got simply pinned-up or taped to walls. Subsequently, finding this poster now, especially in great shape, has become extremely difficult.
It's part of the reason as to why it's become recognized today as one of the most sought after Star Wars and/or movie related collectibles on the market. HOLY GRAIL OF AUTOGRAPHED POSTERS! This particular example of the Chaykin Star Wars poster is perhaps the greatest one in existence! That's because George Lucas personally owned it and gifted it to his neighbor in San Anselmo when Star Wars was still in it's original limited Roadshow release - October of 1977! Because this poster was autographed so early on, before George Lucas was a household name, he signed it with his respectful. Shortly after this time period, the name George Lucas became etched into the lexicon of luminaries and cinema icons alike. Henceforth, as it would forever be, the remainder of George Lucas' life would become riddled with an endless procession of autograph hounds to come and come and come and come...
And so he decided to fundamentally change his signature by drastically abridging it. If you know anything about George Lucas' modern-day signature, you'll know that it's not really a signature at all. It's more of a mark. I call it a "squirrelly squiggle, " but I've been told that's insulting to squirrels.
His signature today is akin to the X mark you'd see in the old western films, when a person who was illiterate, and didn't know how to sign their name, would just marked the paper with an X. Clearly, George Lucas knows how to sign his name, as witnessed by this terrific example of a bona fide 1977 signature! Additionally, Lucas not only signed his name - he wrote his now iconic dialog on it.
May the Force Be With You. That little ditty, which has since become a worldwide catchphrase, makes this autograph a MUST HAVE for any serious Star Wars and/or autograph collector.
The fact that George Lucas personally owned this particular poster and wrote all of this irresistible stuff on it, and, the fact that this poster (on its own) is such a rare and desirable collectible, makes this original George Lucas signed 1976 Chaykin the clear winner in the Holy Grail of autographed Star Wars posters contest! BULLET PROOF LINEAGE AND DOCUMENTED PROVENANCE. There have only been three owners of this poster: George Lucas, the neighbor he gave it to and me. The lineage has been WELL documented and certified. Lucas owned the poster for a little over a year, from 1976 to 1977.
In October of 1977, a neighbor of his sent him a quiz that he'd created on Star Wars. Lucas was so taken with it that he had his personal assistant, Jane Bay, draft a thank you letter in his absence while he was away on vacation (see photo #7). That letter was walked over to his neighbor and hand delivered.Notice the address of The Star Wars Corporation, and, the recipient's address on the letter - they're both in San Anselmo, where Lucas lived. NOTE: A scan of the original letter is posted ONLY for reference to the lineage - the original is NOT included in the sale with this poster. I can provide a color Xerox copy of it if you'd like, but the original is staying with me. It's the only example of the original Star Wars Corporation letterhead I have. I had the previous owner draft a letter of provenance and hand sign it. That letter will be included with the sale of the poster (see photo #6). For good measure, just to button down everything, the poster's autograph was recently evaluated and certified with a PSA/DNA. That important letter of authenticity is also included with the sale of the poster (see photo # 5).
The poster measures 20x29 inches and is in. AMAZING NearMINT UNRESTORED ORIGINAL CONDITION. They leave nothing to the imagination.
As stated in the letter of provenance from the previous owner - the poster was stored in a tube for over 40 years and hasn't seen the light of day. The colors are as fresh as they were back in 1976. Additionally, I've had it stored flat between acid free paper, and so now it is FLAT as a pancake, even flatter. It's ready for framing and display.ADDED 1976 STAR WARS BONUS! These original flyers are RARE! It's funny, there are less collectors who possess this original flyer than the poster. Very few flyers survived; probably thrown away because they were given out free. It's quite an important early artifact. It was put together by Lucas and "The Star Wars Corporation" NOT 20th Century-Fox and their publicity dept.
It has great early information on it. It was CLEARLY made before the completion of the film, as it speaks of elements that were eventually changed. It's an AMAZING read and a must have for any serious Star Wars collector!
