Star Wars originally opened in May of 1977 on just 32 theater screens worldwide.It played continually for more than a year straight to record-breaking crowds in extremely limited release. After that extended "roadshow play, " Fox decided to go wide with Star Wars in the summer of 1978, expanding the number of theaters by the hundreds. The ongoing poster campaign was renewed by issuing this amazing style "D" artwork. There was finally time to execute the poster George Lucas had originally envisioned but couldn't deliver by the films rushed 1977 opening. Two artists, Charles White III and Drew Struzan, were commissioned. This style D artwork was the result.
